Okay, you have the basic knowledge. Now, what is the practical plan of action? The goal of the diagnostic process is to answer three key questions: Where is it? What is it made of? And what is it doing? Here is the standard path you can expect to follow.
The initial X-ray or scan that found the mass is just the beginning. To get a much more detailed look, your doctor will order a Computed Tomography (CT) scan, almost always with an IV contrast dye. This is the gold standard. The contrast helps to light up blood vessels and organs, giving your surgeon a beautiful 3D map of the mass, its size, its exact location, and its relationship to the vital structures around it.
